Speaking in Liverpool on 29 September, Burnham said the triple lock would remain unchanged for the current parliament, as promised in Labour’s 2024 manifesto.
From April 2030, however, he plans to adjust the policy, with the state pension continuing to increase by at least inflation or 2.5%, while maintaining its value against earnings over time.
Burnham said the savings would help fund a National Care Service, including free care for pensioners, while acknowledging the decision could prove politically challenging.
