These partnership funds, with the National Wealth Fund as a cornerstone investor, could help achieve various goals, including advancing the net zero transition, driving regional economic growth, and fostering new technology and innovation. As the shares of these funds would be listed on the London Stock Exchange, the public would have the opportunity to invest alongside the government and other investors, such as pension schemes.
The government’s goal is to significantly boost investment in UK infrastructure and stimulate economic growth. Given fiscal constraints, private capital is essential, and the pensions industry has already committed to increasing its investment in unlisted UK assets.
Richard Stone, Chief Executive of the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), stated: “By partnering with the National Wealth Fund, investment companies could provide a new avenue for investors—ranging from pension funds to individual ISA holders—to finance infrastructure projects, new technologies, or the transition to net zero. This would allow all investors to participate in these forward-thinking projects, which aim to propel the UK economy and generate long-term wealth.”
